Spread the love

It is common for us to question the purpose of our existence. A meaningful existence is grounded in what a person values in life. Living by our values makes us feel motivated and excited to start each day. Evidence suggests that a sense of meaning can improve physical health and increase longevity. In psychology, a meaningful life is defined by purpose, significance, fulfillment, and satisfaction.

Why Do I Question My Purpose?

Many reasons may cause you to feel as though there is no purpose to existence, including:

  • Stressful or difficult situations
  • Lack of fulfillment in relationships, work, school, or leisure activities
  • Downplaying the importance of your achievements
  • Uncertainty about what to do with your life
  • Inability to set goals since you don’t know what you want to accomplish

Regardless of the reason, remember that most people experience similar feelings occasionally.

Five Timeless Lessons for a Meaningful Existence

A study by the Pew Research Center included 19,000 adults. Based on the study, the following are five timeless lessons for a meaningful existence.

  1. Family and Children

In 14 of the 17 advanced economies surveyed, family was cited as a factor in a meaningful existence. Quality time spent with children, grandchildren, parents, and siblings is key. People tend to take pride in their family members’ achievements. Parents also strive to live in a way that leaves a better world for their children. Family can make a person’s life more fulfilling.

  1. Occupation and Career

People in most surveyed places ranked jobs among the top three sources of a meaningful existence. Some find meaning in the work itself, such as a nurse who keeps an ill patient comfortable during recovery. People like their jobs for various reasons, including working with colleagues or being intellectually stimulated.

  1. Material Well-Being

In nine of the 17 economies surveyed, material well-being ranked among the top three factors. Survey respondents cited the importance of having enough money, no debt, food, shelter, the ability to support a family, and leisure activities. Meeting financial needs or being able to afford some luxuries is essential.

  1. Friends and Community

Some survey participants value the benefits of attending a community church. They have found fellowship and support during tough times. People also receive support from family, friends, and co-workers and have fond memories of their interactions and shared experiences.

The communities we live in can contribute to meaning. For example, people in Taiwan appreciate the ease of living on the island. They have access to necessities, a good health insurance system, and a free, democratic society.

  1. Physical and Mental Health

Health is one of the top three sources of meaning for people in about a third of the places surveyed. Exercise and a healthy lifestyle were noted as sources of meaning. What Else Can I Do to Find a Meaningful Existence?

  • Set new goals that excite and uplift you.
  • Think about what you value in life and list them. “Personal values are our moral compass of what to say, how to behave, how to treat ourselves and others, and what life choices to make.”[1]
  • Live in the present; you can’t change the past.
  • Remind yourself of your life achievements.

Conclusion

By identifying your values, you can discover purpose and fulfilment in your life and may increase your longevity. Experiencing life is your unique journey. Living a meaningful existence is within your reach!
